Chronological Information and the Escape: John Quincy Adams

During John’s lifetime slavery was similar to how it was in later years in that Slaves were still bought and sold for money to work as labors. However there did not seem to be as much violence as there would be in the future. American life during the time of John Q. Adams was greatly affected by the Civil War. The Civil War also affected slaves because slave masters were fearful of losing slaves to the Union armies. Many slave owners moved their plantations north and slaves who did stay in the south demanded their freedom.

Escape: John and his family were able to escape slavery and made it to freedom. John’s father, mother, four brothers and two sisters were the only ones to make it to the North out of all 25 of his siblings. They did so because of a man named General Geary. General Geary and his army were given orders that no one was allowed to leave Winchester but John’s father told him about everything that was happening there and he was kind enough to give them a pass through to Pennsylvania.John and his family were able to escape slavery and made it to freedom.
